Scientific Notation Explained
Scientific notation is a way to express very large or very small numbers in a compact form. It’s written as:
a × 10n
Where:
- a (coefficient) is a number between 1 and 10 (1 ≤ |a| < 10)
- n (exponent) is an integer
Example: Large Number
The speed of light is 299,792,458 m/s. In scientific notation:
2.99792458 × 108 m/s
Example: Small Number
The charge of an electron is 0.0000000000000000001602 coulombs. In scientific notation:
1.602 × 10-19 C
