About Future Value
The future value (FV) calculates how much an investment made today will be worth in the future, considering compound interest.
How it’s calculated:
The formula for future value with regular contributions is:
FV = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t) + PMT × [((1 + r/n)^(n×t) - 1] / (r/n)
- P = Principal investment amount
- PMT = Monthly contribution amount
- r = Annual interest rate (decimal)
- n = Number of compounding periods per year
- t = Time the money is invested for (years)
Key Insights:
- Compound interest accelerates growth by earning interest on interest
- Time is your greatest ally – small investments grow significantly over decades
- Regular contributions dramatically increase the final amount
- Higher compounding frequency yields slightly better returns
